The Chinese have a unique calendar system commonly know as the 'Hsia Calendar' or the 'Farmers Calendar'. It is an enthralling system that provides information about the prevailing elemental influences at any give point in time.
It uses five elements - water, wood, earth, mental & fire - and their cycles, to determine the various aspects and influences individual life and the world.

Absolute Basics
Chinese Astrology works with 12 year cycles. Each of the 12 years has its own animal sign in the following order:

Dragon |
Snake |
Horse |
Sheep |
Monkey |
Rooster |
Dog |
Pig |
Even numbered years (ending with 0,2,4,6,8 ) are Yang.
Odd numbered years (ending with 1,3,5,7,9 ) are Yin.
Years ending with specific numbers are also related to the following elements:

Fire |
Earth |
Putting all the above together then results in 60 year cycles.
